Thanks to his Facebook page my 25 year old son has discovered that my doubts about his paternity were confirmed and that his mother, my ex wife, had an affair which resulted in his conception. From the age of about 4 to 15 I brought him up as a single parent so whilst my pride in him continues my disappointment that I did not have a paternal role is profound. His mother lied repeatedly that she did not have an affair so our marriage, being on very rocky ground at this time, was revived. I ended a potential relationship, which might have let me go forward, but this revival was to last for only about another 3 years.

I am now 66 years old without a partner or children living on a basic state pension, having arranged my career around his childcare needs with no help from his mother.

Susan has retired with a local government pension and can face a comfortable future. But the law gives us no remedies for this type of fraud - financial and emotional embezzlement.
